Blued Ponderosa Pine

This cremation urn is made out of Ponderosa Pine (L. Pinus ponderosa) . The bluish stain you see in the top picture is from pine cone beetles. The beetles can cause tree death by transmitting blue stain fungus to the tree.
Ponderosa Pine is one of the most widely grown and used woods in the Pacific Northwest. It uses are many, and is also used as wildlife habitat. The cones bear seeds for birds to eat, and Ponderosa Pine snags are noted for sustaining cavities for nesting birds.
This Companion sized urn measures 9 1/2" wide by 8 " deep by 6" high.
